  • Smell Training Collection
    Smell Training Collection

If you’ve lost your sense of smell for two weeks or more, our Smell Training Collection could help. Smell training (Olfactory training) is actively smelling four essential oils every day for at least four months to try to help repair your sense of smell. Each essential oil’s aroma is distinct, giving your brain a chance to connect with four very different, but recognisable scents. This Exclusive Collection includes:                                                                                        Lime Organic Pure Essential Oil, 9ml Ginger Organic Pure Essential Oil, 9ml Eucalyptus Organic Pure Essential Oil, 9ml Peppermint Organic Pure Essential Oil, 9ml It is NOT recommended to inhale the essential oils direct from the bottle they come in, the bottle opening is considered too small for this exercise and you may inadvertently touch the dropper to your nose. You will need to purchase or have four small glass jars for the process. Empty and clean spice jars or baby food jars are a perfect size. Preparation Line up four separate small glass jars and place absorbent paper, like kitchen paper, blotting paper or even a cotton wool pad, inside. Put 5 drops of each essential oil onto the absorbent paper inside the glass jars. Label each bottle. Keep the lids closed when not using and store in a cool, dark place. Top up drops every 5-6 days. Method Open one jar and hold close to your nose, closing your eyes. Take 6-8 short sniffs ‘mindfully’. It is important to take short sniffs, and not one big inhale. Focus your mind on the scent to allow the aromas to trigger your sense of smell and any associated memories. It is best to carry out this exercise without any interruptions or distractions to allow your brain to fully focus on the aromas. Take a 30 second break before moving onto the next jar and repeating the above process. Ideally, carry out this process twice a day. Our sense of smell is part of our nervous system and may take a long time to heal. Be patient each time you do your smell training and do not feel discouraged if results aren’t immediate. Everyone is different and everyone will have different success rates.

  • How does mold smell and how does chlorine smell?

Mold typically has a musty and earthy smell, often described as damp or stale. This odor is caused by the release of microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) as the mold grows and spreads. On the other hand, chlorine has a sharp and pungent smell, often associated with swimming pools or household cleaning products. • The Smell of Hay
    The Smell of Hay

A new translation of Giorgio Bassani's haunting collection of short stories that evoke 1930s Ferrara, with an introduction by Ali Smith. Isolated lives and a lost world are evoked in these memorable stories set in the Jewish-Italian community of 1930s Ferrara.A young man's unrequited love; a strange disappearance; a faded hotel; a lonely funfair; the smell of mown hay at the gates of the Jewish Cemetery - these vivid, impressionistic snapshots build a picture of life's brevity and intensity.Part of the sequence including The Gold-Rimmed Spectacles and The Garden of the Finzi-Continis, and featuring people and places from these novels, The Smell of Hay is told with a voice that is by turns intimate, ironic, elegiac and rueful. This new translation contains two pieces, added by Bassani to his earlier collection, which have never appeared in English before. 'Powerful new translations . . . Bassani began as a poet, and McKendrick's redelivery of this taut uncompromising fiction reveals resonance and generosity' Ali Smith'Giorgio Bassani is one of the great witnesses of this century, and one of its great artists' GuardianGiorgio Bassani (1916-2000) was an Italian poet, novelist and editor. The Smell of Hay is the last in a series of six works collected together as Il romanzo di Ferrara.Other works in the cycle include The Garden of the Finzi-Continis, which received the Viareggio Prize and inspired an Academy Award-winning film adaptation by Vittorio de Sica, The Gold-Rimmed Spectacles, and Within the Walls (originally published as Five Stories of Ferrara), which won the Strega Prize.Jamie McKendrick is a poet and translator. Osmospheres : Smell, Atmosphere, Food

Offering an overview of the relationship between smell and atmospheres as proposed within the humanities, this volume aims at interpreting the “olfactive” as a cross-sensorial and ecological modality of perception. It investigates osmospheres - i.e., the olfactory irradiances which provide persons, commodities, situations and places with an aura, a vague but unique flavour—from the perspective of relational and social aesthetics. For reasons that are addressed extensively, the central case study is of food, which exemplifies the porous boundaries between subject and environment, identity and alterity, knowing and feeling. In the light of contemporary artistic and marketing practices, in which food osmospheres are staged in order to convey emotions and drive consumer behavior, this work speculates on the socio-political aesthetic implications of osmospheric foodification attempting to capture the essence of today’s urban and domestic dwelling.
